The George is an 18th century, Grade II listed pub on Great Portland Street, Fitzrovia. Across two floors, we offer a food and drink menu befitting of a modern London public house. If pubs could talk, this one would have a lot to say.

As a central hub for the political, cultural and social movements of the late 18th century, home to writers and poets in the 20th century, and in recent years, a favourite haunt of locals and travellers alike, The George has seen it all.

Within the walls of our 1860 ornate facade, gilded Victorian mirrors, enamel paintings and oak panelling remain unchanged, thanks to careful stewardship over the centuries. Green leather seating lines the room, with three screens showing live sports.

The pub spans two floors, with a staircase leading to three rooms for dining and drinking, drawing inspiration from their former use as the living quarters of The George’s bygone landlords. Large regency windows overlook the hustle and bustle of Great Portland Street, with original architectural details throughout. Each room is available for private hire, either individually or as a whole floor, for 50 seated guests or 60 standing.

Concealed behind a panelled door, The Green Room is ideal for groups of up to eight – for lunches, dinners and intimate celebrations, with a private screen. The semi-private Snug, with space for 25 guests, features a large convivial table for group dining and drinking and a screen.

Our intimate and cosy bar, affectionately named ‘The Gluepot’ is home to barrel-aged, unique and classic cocktails. The back bar is lined with a wide range of spirits, including world whiskeys, with a focus on Irish expressions from both emerging and established distillers.

The staircase to nowhere, a quirky design feature which leads to the ceiling, has been transformed into an impressive temperature-controlled wine room displaying the extensive wine collection that backs up the wine vault in the basement, where guests can sample some of the more unique bottles.

Culinary Director James Knappett has worked with Executive Chef Alex Harper on a food menu that reflects the magical simplicity of pub fare, served alongside a range of signature dishes representative of a modern London pub. Snacks and starters, ideal for sharing and created to be enjoyed with a pint, are followed by more substantial dishes, including chops and steaks from the charcoal grill, signature sandwiches, and pub classics.
