Dating back hundreds of years and traditionally known as Worshipful Companies, livery companies have since medieval times played an important role in the City of London with their involvement in the election of the Lord Mayor of this important UK financial district and the charitable activities & networking opportunities that their facilities enable.
Forty of the one hundred and ten livery companies have their own halls with many of them available to hire for private events in The City of London. Apothecaries’ Hall – Black Friars Lane, London EC4
Dating back to 1672, Apothecaries’ Hall is home to The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London. This historic City venue, located close to St. Paul’s, has two smaller private dining rooms with The Court Room accommodating up to 24 seated (50 standing) guests and The Parlour suitable for seated events of up to 25 guests or standing drinks receptions of up to 50 guests. Larger banqueting events can be catered for by The Great Hall (150 seated / 200 standing) and The Courtyard (200 seated / 200 standing guests).
Barber-Surgeons’ Hall – Wood Street, London EC2
The London Wall district of The City has been home to The Worshipful Company of Barbers for nearly 600 years. The livery company’s current hall was opened in 1969, the previous halls having been destroyed in the Great Fire of London and the Luftwaffe blitz of the Second World War three hundred years later. Located in Wood Street – adjacent to The Barbican – Barber-Surgeons’ Hall is a large elegant town house with its own private garden. Barber-Surgeons’ Hall has a selection of private event rooms available to hire for an array of events. Banqueting events are served by The Great Hall which seats up to 120 guests and is also available for standing drinks receptions of up to 250 guests. Smaller events can be accommodated by The Charter Room which seats up to 12 guests, The Reception Room (20 seated / 100 standing guests) and The Court Room (24 seated / 30 standing guests) . The Terrace & Garden at Barber-Surgeons’ Hall is also available for summer parties of up to 200 standing guests.
Brewers’ Hall – Aldermanbury Square, London EC2
Brewers’ Hall houses The Worshipful Company of Brewers. Dating back to medieval times, the current building was opened in 1960, the two previous iterations having – like so many buildings in The City having been destroyed in the Great Fire of London and second world war Blitz. Brewers’ Hall is located at at Aldermanbury Square – within equal walking distance of Bank, Moorgate & St. Paul’s London Underground tube stations in The City. The Committee Room and The Court Room can respectively seat up to 8 and 24 guests with The Livery Hall able to accommodate larger private dining events in The City of up to 86 guests and standing drinks receptions of up to 120 standing guests.
Carpenters’ Hall – Throgmorton Avenue, London EC2
The London Wall part of The City in the Bank/Moorgate area has been home to The Carpenters’ Company since 1429 with the current hall built in 1960. Located on Throgmorton Avenue, just off London Wall, Carpenters’ Hall has two event spaces available for private hire. The Court Room is ideal for private dining events of up to 40 guests with The Livery Hall accommodating large banqueting events in The City of London of up to 220 guests or standing drinks receptions of up to 350 guests.
Chartered Accountants’ Hall – Moorgate, London EC2
One Moorgate Place – also known as Chartered Accountants’ Hall, is the headquarters of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Dating back to 1893, this Grade II listed building has a selection of impressive rooms available for private City events. The Great Hall provides a magnificent environment for banquets of up to 200 guests in the Square Mile or large drinks & canapés events of up to 400 standing guests. One Moorgate Place also caters for small – medium private events with the Reception Rooms and Members Room accommodating 18 – 45 seated (35 – 100 standing) guests.
Coopers’ Hall – Devonshire Square, London EC2
The Worshipful Company of Coopers date back to before the sixteenth century with headquarters at Coopers’ Hall, a pre-Georgian town house located in Devonshire Square, close to Liverpool Street station and Spitalfields on the eastern edge of the City of London. The Dining Room at Coopers’ Hall is perfect for small private dining events of up to 34 seated guests or drinks receptions of up to 50.
Innholders’ Hall – College Street, London EC4
Located close to Cannon Street tube station, Innholders’ Hall has occupied the same site at College Street for 400 years, having survived the Great Fire of London and The Blitz and being rebuilt in its current form in 1950. This historical City livery company is the perfect venue for fine dining events in The City with catering provided by legendary chef patron Herbert Berger, three time recipient of a prestigious Michelin star. The Old & New Court Rooms accommodate 22 – 26 private dining guests with The Old Court Room also available to hire for drinks receptions of up to 40 standing guests.
Founders’ Hall – One Cloth Fair, London EC1
Established in 1365, The Worshipful Company of Founders is one of the oldest medieval guilds in The City of London. Founders were craftsmen who specialised in making objects such as candlestick holders and cooking utensils from brass and tin. The livery company has two event spaces available to hire. The Parlour seats up to 23 guests for private dining events and is also available for standing drinks receptions of up to 60 guests. The main Livery Hall seats smaller private dining events of up to 30 guests and larger City banqueting events of up to 75 guests as well as standing events of up to 120 guests.
Merchant Taylors’ Hall – Threadneedle Street, London EC2
Merchant Taylors’ Hall – the ancient home to The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors is another historic building in the City of London which has survived the Great Fire of London in the seventeenth century and the wartime Blitz three hundred years later. Dating back to the late fourteenth century, Merchant Taylors’ Hall is located just a few minutes walk from Bank tube station and has an excellent selection of private dining rooms available to hire for City corporate events. The Parlour Room seats up to 80 guests for large private dining events and The Great Hall is one of the most impressive City venues for banqueting events of up to and 280 seated guests and grand drinks & canapés receptions of up to 350 standing guests.
Saddlers’ Hall – Gutter Lane, London EC2
Saddlers’ Hall is the seat of The Worshipful Company of Saddlers and has occupied the same site, close to St. Paul’s in The City, since 1395. The building as it stands today was opened in 1958 with previous Saddlers’ Hall buildings having been destroyed in the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries. The Great Hall at one of the oldest City livery companies accommodates up to 152 guests for City banqueting events or up to 200 guests for large drinks events. The Court and Livery Rooms are ideal for smaller events of 20 – 40 seated (50 – 80 standing) guests.
Vintners’ Hall – Upper Thames Street, London EC4
Home to The Worshipful Company of Vintners, Vintners’ Hall dates back to 1446 and, with its original building having been destroyed by the Great Fire of London, the current livery hall opened in 1671. This grand City venue on Upper Thames Street – within easy walking distance of Cannon Street station – has private dining rooms seating 24 – 158 guests. The Gassiot Room accommodates 24 seated (40 standing ) guests with The Boardroom able to accommodate up to 25 seated guests as well as up to 25 guests for standing drinks receptions on its roof terrace. The Livery Hall at Vintners’ Hall is suitable for large banqueting events of up to 158 guests and drinks & canapés receptions of up to 250 standing guests.
Stationers’ Hall – Ave Maria Lane, London EC4
The building of Stationers’ Hall dates back to 1606 and is the home of The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. Located on Ave Maria Lane, close to both St. Paul’s Cathedral and London Underground tube station in The City, Stationers’ Hall has private dining rooms a variety of guest capacities. The Charter room seats up to 12 guests. For larger events, The Stock Room can accommodate up to 50 seated (90 standing) guests and The Court Roomaccommodates up to 90 seated (160 standing) guests.
